California Propositions

I am in favor of Proposition 10 and believe that it needs to be passed.

Proposition 10 will give cash rebates of between $2,000-$50,000 on purchases of fuel efficient vehicles and will generate electricity from clean, renewable energy sources. In addition, it will fund research, development, education, and job training for/about alternative energy.

First off, it will begin to decrease our dependence on foreign oil, which is a national security risk. If Iran were to cut off the Strait of Hormuz, which is a great supply of oil, then not only would it result in inflation and slowed economic growth, but it might force the U.S. to intervene militarily, and do you really want another war?

Secondly, there are many positive economic incentives. The U.S. oil import bill is projected to be over $400 billion this year and fuel-efficient vehicles and alternative energy sources would greatly reduce this cost. Also, sending money abroad to pay for oil weakens the dollar. This increases inflation and causes us to pay more for foreign goods. Finally, passing this proposition will create more jobs. Car companies will want to greatly increase production, so they will need to expand their businesses, resulting in more jobs. Clean, renewable energy sources will need to be designed, built, and maintained, which will create even more jobs. This will reduce unemployment rates and the taxes paid as a result of the income on those jobs will go to state funds.

In addition, the price of crude oil and gasoline will go down. The demand for oil has gone down in the past months, and as a result, the price of gas has gone down. With more fuel efficient cars, less gas will be consumed, and the price of gas will drop even lower.

If California passes this proposition, then many other states will follow suit and this will reduce/eliminate our dependence on foreign oil as well as save billions of dollars each year, which could be better used. All that you need to do is vote yes on Proposition 10 and the U.S. as a whole will be a better place for not only us, but for future generations to come.

I find it to be a necessity for our state. Please advise me as to your opinion regarding this issue and why.

California does not have a budget at present - and we are facing a 15 B$ deficit - where is this rebate coming from and just how will fund new energy sources and research?
I don't get it...if sending money overseas weakens our dollar - why don't we drill for it here? - More jobs - More tax revenue from the oil companies and we prop up or weak dollar...that will lower gas prices as well.
I am not against alt energy sources - just think if they are viable they will be developed with less gov't help.

This measure is a $3 billion giveaway of tax revenue OUR CHILDREN will be paying, wrapped in $2 billion of tempting pork giftwrap. Don't be fooled; the only real winner here is Clean Energy Fuels Corp. - the fuel provider for the vast majority of all those natural gas vehicles Californians are going to be subsidizing.

Opponents of Prop 10 include: Sierra Club, League of Conservation Voters, Union of Concerned Scientists, Natural Resources Defense Council, Environment California, California Taxpayers Association, California Labor Federation AFL-CIO, Governor Schwarzenegger, State Treasurer Bill Lockyer, and Air Resources Board Chair Mary Nichols. Why? It's squanders $10 billion to steer us away from promising alternative fuel technology, onto a fossil fuel natural gas bridge to nowhere.

40 daily newspapers wrote editorials against Prop 10.
These opponents include Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Sacramento Bee, San Jose Mercury News, San Diego Union Tribune, Bakersfield Californian and Orange County Register.

Prop 10 redefines “clean” trucks to include trucks that spew identical amounts of pollution as the diesel trucks that are on the road today, yet these so called “clean” trucks qualify for $50,000 subsidies from California taxpayers. NOTHING in PROP 10 stops interstate trucking companies that register a "clean" truck in California for one day from moving the truck to another state after they collect the $50,000 handout. No on 10 - Don't cut our schools to make a Texas oil tycoon richer. Visit: www.stopprop10.org
